Livingston Arts has been Livingston County’s official arts council for 45 years. The mission of the arts council is to enrich the quality of life in Livingston County by encouraging and promoting the arts and cultural activities through support of artists, schools and community groups.
A not-for-profit corporation, the Council is dedicated to the development and promotion of the arts and culture in this beautiful region of western New York. Livingston Arts was incorporated as Genesee Valley Council on the Arts, a not-for-profit corporation in 1971 and designated Livingston County’s official arts organization in 1974. Through the generosity of Livingston County, in 2008, GVCA expanded its current location, adding the New Deal Gallery and Apartment One Gallery in the Livingston Arts Center. Arts, culture, and movement classes and programming are held at Livingston Arts.
The arts council manages three galleries at Livingston Arts and holds various exhibit openings, arts and theater events throughout the year. We also support an array of programs and services for artists, arts and cultural organizations, students and the community at large. The arts council forms partnerships with businesses, schools, SUNY Geneseo, libraries, historical societies and other organizations and individuals to serve local artists and audiences. Our programs include an annual members exhibit, artists’ residencies in the schools, traditional arts presentations at various sites around the county, an annual high school student art exhibit, Community Arts Grants for arts and cultural projects, Individual Artists Grants, and Grants for Young Artists which support high school juniors’ and seniors’ study in the arts. In addition, we maintain an extensive registry of local artists, provide information and assistance, and publish ArtSphere, a quarterly newsletter for members containing the county’s most comprehensive arts and cultural calendar.
Livingston Arts is a non-profit organization that receives some general operating funds from The New York State Council on the Arts and Livingston County. The remainder of funds are raised through membership and fundraising activities.
