GLOW Traditions at Livingston Arts to host a Round and Square Dance at York School
GLOW Traditions at Livingston Arts invites everyone to our annual Round & Square Dance on Saturday, April 29, 2017 with lessons from 7:00-7:30pm and dancing from 7:30-10:30pm, in the elementary gymnasium at York Central School, 2578 Genesee Street, Retsof, NY.
Admission is $5 Adults; $3 Spectators, those 18 and younger are free. All ages are welcome. Music and calling will be provided by Kelly’s Old Timers, now counting 60+ years of performing, along with members of the Geneseo String Band led by SUNY Geneseo Professor, Jim Kimball.
If you’ve never been to a square dance, learn the basic steps at 7:00 pm. No special clothing or prior knowledge is required—beyond knowing your left from your right! The dance is truly a fun evening for all ages, and a great opportunity to enjoy a longtime local tradition. Refreshments will be available.
Eric Kelly, leader of Kelly’s Old Timers and MS-HS instrumental music teacher at York, tells us that many a square dance was held in the gym in years past. Eric’s father Roger and his uncle Woody Kelly started the band in the 1950’s. The group continues with Doug Kelly calling the dances and playing bass, Eric on keyboards and vocals, Guy Macaluso on keyboards, vocal, trumpet and guitar, and Tom Kwiecien on drums. Members of the Geneseo String Band will join the group on fiddles, guitar, banjo, mandolin and washboard.
The Round and Square Dance is presented by GLOW Traditions at Livingston Arts, with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NYS Legislature.
